Nyeri County, the exotic travel destination of choice

Nyeri County is located in the central region of Kenya. Its headquarters and largest town is Nyeri.

It has a population of 661,156 and an area of 3,356 km².Over the years, many have not realized how one can get an absolute thrilling get away there.

It is the home to Mt. Kenya National Park which harbors Mt. Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya at 5,199 meters and is located 180 Kilometers from Nairobi.

Here you can you can have your better moments at mount Kenya’s highest peak, Batian which is at 5,199 meters, while having spent hours at Nelion peak which is at 5,188 meters and Lenana at 4,985metres.

There are other four secondary peaks . The mountain has a broad cone-shape and is characterized by two rainy seasons that is from March to June and October to November.

At Mt. Kenya national park, you can have an encounter with exotic wildlife animals of all kinds.

The mountain has some indigenous trees, natural springs with trout fish, historical caves and ancient shrines.

Nyeri County is also home to Aberdare Ranges National Park which was established in May 1950 and covers an area of 762Km covering the Aberdare Mountain Ranges.

The park has spectacular sceneries from the mountain tops to deep valleys with streams, rivers, and waterfalls.

Animals simply observed in the park include; the Black Rhino, leopard, baboon and Sykes monkey. Animals like the eland and melanistic serval cats can be found higher up in the moorlands.

The park hosts over 250 bird’s species. Guests can also indulge in eat al fresco, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands.

Nyeri is the burial place of Lord Robert Baden Powell. He was a fighter in the Boer War and the founder of the Scouting movement. Nyeri to date remains to be the home of the scouting movement.

It is also home to Zaina Falls which is located at Gakanga Valley in Zaina Forest, Nyeri district.

The falls are situated at a steep slope which stands over 60%; Going up and down the slope will make you shed a few kilos.

The valleys present gorgeous scenery. The streams at the lower sides of the valley offer tasty waters. A few meters away is the Zaina river.

The top of the hill marks the beginning of another steep descent. After another few meters comes the Chania River.

The banks of Chania River provide a setup of a picnic site.

You like spending your time on ranches doing the cowboy stunts, Nyeri county is the solution to your cravings, Solio Game Ranch is located 22Kilometres on 17,000 acres North of Nyeri.

It’s a fenced area which is protected for Rhino’ssafe guarding. Over 120 black and white rhinos can be found here.

Italians also didn’t spare Nyeri County while making land marking in the world with their rich culture.

The Italian War Memorial Church in Nyeri is Located a few meters from Ihururu road about five kilometers from Nyeri Town.

The walls of the church are lined with rows of domes with the remains of the fallen soldiers. The names and date of death of the soldiers are imprinted on each vault.

Nyeri County is home to Mau Mau fighter Dedan Kimathi who was born here.

The cave was revealed in 1953 by the Mau Mau freedom fighters. This was after the declaration of emergency in 1952.

In 1953, British soldiers arrested and forced the captives to show them the exact location of the Mau Mau hideouts .

This resulted in the British trying to bomb the cave. The bomb missed the target and struck 200meters away.

The bombing nonetheless to some extent destroyed the opening of the smaller cave while the main cave remained unharmed.

Mau Mau fighters left the hideout after that happening. The cave was gazetted in 2003 by the national museums of Kenya and was declared a national monument.

A variety of birds species are found in the forests surrounding the caves. Worrying of how you will get to Nyeri? Relax; it is accessible through both road and air.

The Mweiga and Sangare airstrip are used for accessing the area by air.
