Despite the influence from the ODM party leader Hon Raila Odinga and influential ODM politicians from the coastal region and across the country, ODM candidate Boga Gii has lost the Msambweni by-election. The independent candidate Feisal Badder who received support from Tangatanga/ Hustler Nation affiliates and Kwale governor Salim Murya has won the seat.
This is a big blow to the ODM party for losing In the perceived stronghold area. However, it is not the first time for ODM to experience such a defeat in the coastal region. In 2017 Kwale governor Salim Mvurya ditched ODM and won the Kwale gubernatorial seat with the Jubilee ticket challenging the odd perception.
Since then, Governor Salim Mvurya has relentlessly worked in bringing political changes in the coastal region in a slow but sure move. Unlike his counterparts, Joho and Alison Kingi, Mvurya is not very vocal on media platforms but rather he is very vocal in his backyard. Thus, his remarks to the local community are highly regarded.
Mvurya has been campaigning tirelessly for independent candidate Mr. Feisal urging the residents to vote for him. Mvurya’s influence in the campaign, therefore, may have greatly contributed to Feisa’s Win.
